Kenny Barron

United States

Named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2010 and regarded as one of the most lyrical pianists of our time, Kenny Barron (born in Philadelphia in 1943) has established himself over six decades as a major figure of jazz piano. Arriving in New York at age 19, he quickly drew attention playing alongside Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan, and James Moody, before being hired by Dizzy Gillespie, who helped shape his taste for Latin rhythms. Over the years, Kenny Barron has collaborated with giants such as Freddie Hubbard, Yusef Lateef, Ron Carter, and Stan Getz — with whom he recorded the unforgettable People Time — and co-founded the quartet Sphere. A prolific bandleader, he has released more than forty albums and earned around ten Grammy Award nominations, all while mentoring several generations of musicians during decades of teaching at Rutgers. Celebrated by international critics and honored with numerous awards, Kenny Barron remains, in solo or with his long-lasting trio, a master of melodic elegance, harmonic invention, and the art of swing.
